Access layer Ethernet switches are closest to end users and their various devices. Traditional client-server networks have three tiers. Generally only a limited amount of “north-south” traffic travels between a server and a client located outside the data center. Data center network traffic tends to be more “east-west” in nature – traveling between servers, or between servers and storage systems that are largely side by side. The spine and leaf network topology, also known as the leaf and spine network topology, was created to more efficiently accommodate modern data center traffic, which has different characteristics as compared to traditional enterprise network client-server traffic.
